In his two decades at the top echelons of opera, Nathan Gunn has sung his way through plenty of tragedies — including the title role in “Hamlet,” that fraught saga of a father and son.

But it took a real-life tragedy involving his own dad for Gunn to come around to performing a work rooted in stories from his life and career.
